Spotifys New UI

Posted: 14 Mar 2018 05:21 AM PDT

You probably heard about the upcoming spotify UI that uses three tabbed interface. After lurking on r/spotify, I realize how to activate the new Spotify UI.

Steps

  1. Create a new Spotify account.
  2. Download Spotify App from Google Play Store
  3. Log-in and the new UI should greet you. If not. Try selecting the delete cache and saved data

The UI

There's a four tab at the bottom. The last one is Premium which will apparently disappear if you upgrade to premium. There should only three tabs according to Android Police article

Home tab

Home tab purpose is very similar to old UI. There's a new UI tweak though like this one.

  • Spotify will give you special playlist that you can play on demand. The Daily Mix is also on demand.
  • Clicking the top right icon will bring you to your profile which is very different compare to the old one.
  • This is what the on demand playlist looks like.

Search Tab

This is the new search.

  • After searching for a playlist. This is what the playlist looks like. Notice the blue icon telling you that the playlist is shuffle only.
  • There's two option if you scroll down. Selecting preview will bring you here. It shows you list of song in the playlist. It even gives you a preview by tapping on the album art.

Your Playlist Tab

I'm using a new account so my playlist is empty. Notice the Favorite playlist. Apparently that is your new "My Library". It's a playlist so the UI is very similar to the Project Diva playlist I showed before.

  • Now playing UI screenshot 1 and screenshot 2

Premium tab

Here's what it looks like.

Things I observed

  • Following is replaced by Likes
  • Tapping the heart will add it to your Favorite playlist
  • I think you can't sort your favorite playlist by artist/album/recently added.

PS: Pardon my english. If you can't understand something. Feel free to try it. I provided the steps already.

Lets talk about the current state of Android tablets

Posted: 14 Mar 2018 03:24 PM PDT

I really want a tablet to use to draw, and I don't like iOS so I looked for Android alternatives, but it turns out that I could find almost no good ones at all. There were a few here and there, but the rest are just cheap tablets from unknown Chinese brands. I finally just had to suck it up and realize that iOS/Windows are really my only options.

Like what happened to the Android tablet market and why did it decline? Is Android really only good on phones or what? And what could possibly be done to revitalise this market?

Unpopular Opinion: I like Bixby

Posted: 14 Mar 2018 05:18 PM PDT

I got my first phone with Bixby on Tuesday (Galaxy S9+) and I have to say, I actually don't hate it. I loved Google Now, but Assistant has made things much more complicated (I can't just add to my Grocery List? Really?). I'm actually finding myself liking Bixby.

Interview with Designer of Sony: real reason for removing audio jack; curved back, FPS and other designing details on Xperia XZ2 (link in text)

Posted: 14 Mar 2018 03:40 PM PDT

Link (Chinese): https://www.mobile01.com/topicdetail.php?f=569&t=5410457&p=1

Google Translate to English: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mobile01.com%2Ftopicdetail.php%3Ff%3D569%26t%3D5410457%26p%3D1&edit-text=&act=url

TL; DR:

  • The designer of Sony Japan, Yoshimune Iijima, answered a few questions about design decisions after the launch event of Xperia XZ2 in Taiwan.

  • The curved back which is thick in the middle is because they want the phone to feel comfortable. The camera and FPS aligning on a line makes it look like HTC U11+.

  • The FPS is located at the center because the design team wants the FPS easy to reach when any of the four corners lies in your palm regardless of whether the phone is portrait or landscape.

  • SONYs originality of XZ2 is in its color and its curvature. Color is inspired by reflection of light and water. Silver is like the surface of water reflecting the sunshine. Black is like the blurred light reflected by the deep sea in a dark night. Green is the dark green and blue light shining through the sea. Pink is the sunset color reflecting on water.

  • Next flagships will follow the same design concept of Ambient Flow.

  • Reason for removing the 3.5mm audio jack: The design team heard from SONY audio division that starting from 2017, the ratio between wired and wireless headphones is reversed and wireless headphones were sold more than wired ones. The team considered its the right time to cancel the audio and let consumers get used to wireless headphones. Hi-Res audio is still supported through the included adapter or LDAC Bluetooth.

  • As for OLED and FPS under the screen, designers cannot decide what components can be used. The team thinks whether to use new materials depends on if they satisfy the demand.

Where are you from and what is the variety of phones you see when you walk around outside/at work?

Posted: 14 Mar 2018 01:49 PM PDT

I'll start. Slovakia, most common devices are cheap android phones that providers offer, mostly Huawei PX Lite ones. Young people go for older iPhones (6, 6s). Samsung or iPhone X can also be seen.
